One of the most successful partnerships between a manufacturer and national football federation just got longer. Both Nike and the Portuguese Football Federation have agreed to extend their partnership through 2024.
Nike has designed and supplied the apparel for 25 Portuguese soccer, futsal, and beach soccer squads since 1997. The soccer manufacturer also has plans to continue the development of the women’s game in Portugal. Not surprising, considering the during Nike’s time as the national squad supplier the Portugal Women’s soccer squad ended up competing in the European finals.
The men’s national squad has qualified for 10 consecutive finals stages, including the upcoming World cup games in Russia. Of course, one of Nike’s most famous sponsored athletes also happens to play for the Portuguese squad, which makes the extension a win-win both for Cristiano Ronaldo and Nike.
One of the primary reasons we see for the continued partnership is that some of the best jersey designs Nike has produced in the last five years have been for Portugal. Their 2016 Away jersey was one of Nike’s most popular jerseys for the year. It sold out faster than the home kit.
Given the success of the away kit color, expect Nike to run with it, as the company does not shy away from using colors repeatedly, especially when they’re as popular as this away kit was. While we don’t have any new release information yet about the 2017 kits, it’s reasonable to expect they’ll be some of the most popular of the year.
